The Truth about Insurance Essentials: Protecting Yourself & Your Property

Updated: 12 minutes ago

Insurance is often treated as a set-it-and-forget-it decision, but that approach becomes riskier as circumstances change.

What most people don’t realize is how often insurance coverage fails to keep pace with life transitions. Common misconceptions include assuming homeowner’s or renter’s policies are comprehensive, that liability exposure is minimal, or that insurance and estate planning operate independently of one another.

This seminar took a practical look at insurance essentials for older adults. We discussed what typical property and liability policies cover, where common gaps exist, and how coverage needs change when downsizing, relocating, or moving into senior living. The discussion also examined how insurance aligns with estate planning, ownership structures, and beneficiary designations.

Attendees heard real-world examples that illustrate how proper coordination prevented problems—and how lack of coordination led to avoidable consequences.

The goal of this seminar was to provide clarity around what to review, what to update, and how insurance decisions fit into broader long-term planning.

Expert Panelists included:
